Recording Workshop Grads in Action

A 2009 Grammy win was shared by RecW grad Bill McKinney. The “Best Surround Sound Album” went to the Telarc Records Mussorgsky/Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra project Bill worked on with Michael Bishop and Robert Woods. Bill and Michael Bishop have also just launched a new production company called 5/4 Productions.

Joe Keiser - The Sydney (Australia) Opera House

Working for Clair/Showco, Joe Keiser was in charge of the audio mix for President Obama’s acceptance speech in Chicago’s Grant Park. And Joe was called in to handle Clair/Showco’s audio work for the Inauguration in Washington DC as well. Currently mixing monitors for Keith Urban’s “Born to Love” world tour, Joe will be pretty busy throughout 2009. 


A 2009 Grammy nomination for “Best Engineered Album” was received by RecW grad Jon Smeltz. Jon spent a year in various New York studios tracking and mixing the project “Lay It Down” for the legendary soul and R&B singer Al Green. Guest artists John Legend, The Roots, Questlove and Anthony Hamilton made this a project to remember.



Mark Capps-Engineer

Having three Grammys to his credit, Mark Capps has worked with a who’s who in Nashville on a variety of albums from artists such as Brooks & Dunn, Trace Atkins, Alabama, Lonestar, Tracy Lawrence, Joe Diffie & The Dixie Chicks.


In Orlando, FL Scott Hays is working freelance. Recent gigs include FOH/monitor engineer for former NKOTB, Aaron Carter and Jordan Knight. Scott also worked on the “How to be a Megastar “ DVD project for Blue Man Group and will be working the 2009 Latin Billboard Music Awards with fellow RecW grad Ryan Chapin.



Studio 1 - Record Plant
Los Angeles, CA
Geoff Godfrey works for The Record Plant in Los Angeles.  He has worked on sessions with The Black Eyed Peas, Snoop Dogg, NERD and Justin Timberlake. Geoff joins Jason Carson, a fellow RecW grad who is the studio’s chief technician.

Albuquerque, NM is home to Doug Geist - producer, engineer and owner of Santa Fe Center Recording Studios. Doug won a Grammy Award for engineering Best Native American Music Album - "Flying Free" by Black Eagle. He is also a seven-time Grammy Nominee and has been featured in EQ Magazine. Doug has mixed audio for television shows and produced international and national CD releases.

Courtney Young is the chief audio engineer for the ABC affiliate in Kansas City, KS. In addition to handling the mixing duties for news programming, Courtney mixes the weekly live music show “The Turnpike”.


With over 30 gold and platinum awards to his credit, Joe Smith continues to use his considerable audio chops to bring CD's, music projects and special events to life. Recently, Joe has been working with Disney on Pirates of the Caribbean, a new project for Cirque du Soleil and producing a CD for Grizz in NYC. Joe has engineered, mixed and produced projects for NSync, Lisa Loeb, Backstreet Boys, Mandy Moore and The Quad City DJ's among others.

Studio A-The Mix Room, Los Angeles

Working at The Mix Room in Los Angeles, Alan Mason has engineered, mixed and assisted on a variety of national releases from artists such as Nine Inch Nails, Christina Aguilera, Neil Diamond, AFI, Barbra Streisand and others. Alan also engineered and mixed various songs on Eminem’s blockbuster “The Slim Shady LP” .


Baton Rouge, LA is home to Blackwell Communication Group owned by RecW grad Marianne Blackwell. She has engineered and mixed spots for Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, 1-800-Collect and did the audio post for a Snoop Dogg video. 




Quad Recording Studios

 In the Big Apple, Keith Slattery works at Quad Recording Studios. Quad is one of Manhattan’s prominent rooms whose client list reads like a who’s who of the music industry. That list includes Paul McCartney, Alicia Keys, Creed, Coldplay, Outkast, Brandy, Lenny Kravitz and others.


In Columbia, MD, April Raullerson records audio for Twiga Associates. They produce shows for Dateline, The Disney Channel and The Learning Channel.  




In Marina Del Rey, CA, Jaime Rau is a Pro Tools Editor/Mixer for Motionworks. Her audio-post projects include “The Lord of the Rings-Trilogy” and “The Matrix Reloaded”. 


In San Francisco, CA, Steve Hager is interning at Hyde Street Studios. Their recent client list  includes Green Day and Bonnie Raitt.

Tim Dutton-Audio Technologies

In Cincinnati, OH, Tim Dutton owns Tim Dutton Audio Technologies. He specializes in recording sound for picture. Recent clients include NBC Sports (Kentucky Derby), Chevy Trucks, and Wendys.



Nashville, TN, is home to Mills Logan who engineered and mixed tracks for Toby Keith's current multi-platinum offering "White Trash With Money" as well as Lyric Street Records release: "Me and My Gang" by Rascal Flatts. Mills is one of Music City's "go to" guys and has worked on projects for Kenny Rogers, Trent Tomlinson as well as rockers Sister Hazel and Collective Soul.


In beautiful Brooklyn, CT, Michael Hopkins owns Ascension Studios with Rickie Lee Racicot. He won a Grammy for his engineering work on "Timeless" by Hank Williams, was nominated for another Grammy for recording Lynn Marie and The Boxhounds for Best Polka Album and recorded Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw and more. Michael's skills are not limited to music projects, he has also provided audio enhancements for the films "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Serendipity" and recorded audio for numerous commercials for McDonalds, Toyota, Arby's and others.

In midtown Manhattan, NYC, Rob Fielack is an engineer, sound designer and senior partner at Nutmeg Audio Post. Nutmeg is one of New York's most successful studios specializing in audio post production and sound design for film, television, radio and video. Their client list include The Apprentice, Fairly Odd Parents as well as ad spots for Burger King, British Airways, Heineken and Volkswagon. 


In LA, CA, Nick Braun works at Westlake Audio, one of the most prominent studios in the world. Westlake’s client list reads like a who’s who of the recording industry. Recent clients include Three Doors Down, Faith Hill, Slayer, and Britney Spears tracking for an upcoming release.

Based in Boston, MA, and owning his own facility M-Works, mastering engineer extraordinaire Jonathan Wyner is just back from Seoul. He was invited as a guest speaker  for  several mastering clinics held for South Korea’s professional studio community. One of Jonathan’s ongoing projects includes the restoration of the audio from concert promoter Bill Graham aka “Wolfgang’s Vault”. Included are concerts by Cream, CSNY, Bruce Springsteen, Miles Davis, Paul McCartney, Bob Marley, George Harrison and many other household names. 


St. Louis is home to Jason McEntire, proud owner of Sawhorse Recording. Jason starts a project this May with producer Chris Testa, who brings a track record of producing the latest CD “Chase This Light” for Interscope artist Jimmy Eat World. Jason’s own track record includes engineering work with Son Volt and Destiny’s Child.

Doc Wiley - Engineer/Producer

Based in sunny Miami, FL, Doc Wiley recently won a Grammy for engineering “Best Salsa/Merengue Album” for “Son del Alma” by Sony artist Willy Chinno using his Digidesign Icon D-Control. Doc has enjoyed a long successful career in music as a producer and recording engineer and was one of the first studio owners in the world to use Pro Tools to track major label releases. 


In Edmonton, KY, Jon Lawhon is the bass player/vocalist for Black Stone Cherry, currently on tour to support their CD “Folklore & Superstition”. Doing the FOH mix for the band is RecW grad Matt Shepherd. The US leg of this tour includes shows with Motley Crue, Slipknot and others.



In New York City, Jordan Kuker did an internship with MTV which included working at the Video Music Awards. The internship also consisted on making daily deliveries to various record labels throughout the city including Sony, RCA, Columbia, Island/Def Jam, Jive and Interscope.

in Seattle, WA, is home to staff engineer Justin Friesen. Electro Kitty just received a Double Platinum Award for cutting vocals on Carrie Underwood's "Some Hearts". This room is a favorite of producers Joe Chiccarelli (Elton John, Beck) and Bob Power (Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul). Electro Kitty Recording and Mastering was also recently featured in
EQ Magazine’s “Room With a VU”.

Based in Athens, GA, Dave Barbe produced “Bigger Than Creation’s Dark”, the latest project for Drive By Truckers who just performed at Coachella 2009. Also at Coachella was Dave’s former Sugar bandmate Bob Mould. Dave has produced and been a musician on many great projects at his own Chase Park Transduction Studios. One standout project that Dave recently engineered on was the critically acclaimed “Stay Positive” by The Hold Steady. 


In New York City, Ron Robinson, Jr. is the Manager of Studio Content for Atlantic Records. The artist catalogue that he maintains includes recordings by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, Otis Redding, Sonny & Cher, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Genesis, Yes and many others.

In Cleveland, OH, Jim Stewart is a staff engineer at Metrosync Studios. Jim recently completed tracking vocals for an upcoming release for Eddie LeVert which he made with existing tracks of songs by his late son, Gerald LeVert. The CD was produced by longtime creative partner Tony Nichols for Trevel Productions to be released on Atlantic Records. Jim also tracks live shows for the legendary Agora Ballroom, including recent shows for Hatebreed and 30 Seconds to Mars.


In Ft. Myers, FL, Rob Robinson owns Studio Sea with partners Rickey Medlocke of Lynyrd Skynyrd and manager Al Nalli. Rob has earned two gold records for engineering Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “live From Steeltown” and “Vicious Cycle”. He also produced a remake of the Skynyrd classic “Gimme Back My Bullets” featuring Kid Rock.

In Milwaukee, WI, Jim Bartz has invented a custom 40-string music instrument designed for advancing future music in 5.1 Surround Sound. It is call The Stringstation. (www.stringstation.com). Jim is also a producer/engineer and a former Passport/Audion recording artist and was signed as a guitarist by Larry Fast of Peter Gabriel’s band. 


Based in Albuquerque, NM, Kindel Wilemon continues to have success with her band Liquefaction who was a finalist in the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for the song “Pressure” in the Electronic category. 




Chicago is home to Bosco Productions and RecW grad Joey Spurlock. Joey has just moved up from intern to assistant engineer. He has engineered commercial voice-overs for Lowes, Durex, Pharmos and others.

In Atlanta, GA, Kellee Ross has worked in many areas of the music business including Dallas Austin’s Studio, EMI, The Atlanta Grammy Chapter of NARAS, and performance rights organization SESAC.

In Brussels, Belgium, Bjorn Raes specializes in audio for television broadcast, working for both Videohouse and db Video Productions. Bjorn engineered the surround sound mix for the European transmission of the 2009 Super Bowl and he does the audio for the Belgium version of the game show “Deal or No Deal”.

In Kansas City, MO, Forest Jones is working for Forerunner Music Group as an engineer in their production studio including live studio mixes for international satellite TV. Some of the bands and producers he has worked with are Merchant Band, Luke Wood, Josh Motlong, Beau Miller, and Marcus Meier.





In Copenhagen, Denmark, Jesper Bay is the marketing director at IFPI Denmark–the Danish affiliate of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.


In Atlanta, GA Jimmy Guthrie is a senior sound designer/audio post engineer for Turner Studios which includes The Cartoon Network, TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies. Jimmy is currently recording Andre Benjamin's new cartoon project starring Andre and TLC's T-Boz.

The Deftones

Ryan Gorman is now living and working in Southern California. He engineered the new studio album by The Deftones entitled "Saturday Night Wrist". Ryan recorded this CD at Airport Studios in Burbank with Shaun Lopez producing.


Working for the Nashville office of Clair/Showco, Dustin Ponscheck is currently on tour doing FOH mix for Sheryl Crow. Dustin’s previous tour gigs include Beck and many others.

Working at Reflection Sound Studio in Charlotte, NC, Michael Pepe has been helping out on sessions with Bruce Irvine, Don Dixon, Mark Williams, and Bob Engel, as well as gospel singer Vanessa Bell Armstrong, American Idol Fantasia Barrino, Anthony Hamilton and Tarsha McMillian.


Barbershop Studios is located on beautiful Lake Hoptacong, NJ, and was recently featured on the cover of Mix Magazine. RecW grad Austin Briggs works at this Francis Manzella designed studio which is owned by Scott Barber and Mark Salamone.

Based in New York City, recent grad Andrew Maynard works for Effanel Music. One of the world’s leading, live music, remote and mobile recording specialists, Effanel is at the top of the list for many of today’s premiere artists, producers and labels. Andrew recently helped record The Grammy Awards as a Pro Tools engineer. They used 3 trucks with 232 inputs of Pro Tools in Dolby 5.1 to the main truck alone. Effanel has a huge list of credits / clients that include U2, JLo, Shania Twain, Ludacris, Los Lonely Boys, and a ton of others.


In Atlanta, GA, Travis “Shades” Robeson is engineering at Tree Sound Studios. Travis assisted on the “Chicken and Beer” CD for Ludacris and on session work for Andre 2000/Big Boi/Outkast and The Indigo Girls.
